Baltimore sisters Claribel and Etta Cone assembled one of the world’s most important modern art collections, including over 500 works by Matisse as well as masterpieces by Picasso, van Gogh, and Gauguin. Following a curator introduction to the Cone Collection, embark on a special tour through the collection followed by lunch in the museum’s premier restaurant, Gertrude’s, and free time to explore the museum.

“The city” and “nature” were consistent subjects in late nineteenth and early twentieth century art, when artists grappled with a rapidly industrializing world. This course examines both themes. Lectures cover the following topics:

• The R/realism of Painting Nature: Courbet, Millet, Manet, and Eakins
• Symbolic Landscapes: Seurat, van Gogh, Gauguin, and Cézanne
• The Gritty City: Henri, Sloan, Shinn, and Bellows
• Precisely Urban: Stella, Demuth, Hopper, and Davis

Read a new play that connects to the Museum’s exhibition Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt and discuss ways of bringing what you have read back to your students. During parts 1 and 2 of the workshop, we read and discuss the play Gee’s Bend (written by Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder and which will be performed by the Arden Theatre Company this fall) and make connections between the play, the exhibition, and the history of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, and its quilters. Part 3 focuses on related books for students and on cross-curricular connections for your classroom. We supply the play manuscript.

Chilean singer/songwriter/arranger Claudia Acuña draws upon the culture of her homeland by fusing Latin rhythms with her instinctive jazz sensibilities. Singing mostly in Spanish, Acuña makes it clear that music crosses all barriers.
